CHAPTER Sixteen

Dillon awoke to the stench of his own vomit. His head clanged with a hangover. He could not at first recall what had happened the night before. Then the sports bar came back to him, and then the Super Bowl playing on a huge screen. The waitresses all had big breasts, and the drunker he got, the more obnoxious his behavior became. He remembered some snippets of dialogue, lustful gropings, things which made him cringe now. He could barely remember his companions. He could not remember who won the game. He could not remember driving home but had obviously thrown himself on the bed fully clothed. The bed reeked of vomit, beer, and stale cigarette smoke. He staggered into the bathroom and retched into the toilet, producing nothing but dry heaves, before turning on the shower and stepping fully clothed into the spray.

As the hot water beat on his head, he began to remember more. There were two women who spent a lot of time at the bar with him. He bought drinks for them and finally propositioned one of them. She turned him down flat. It seems she objected to his attitude, to his being rude and insisting on talking about himself all night, about what a big shot lawyer he was and how this case he had was going to make his name. She was not thrilled to discover he was married even when he swore up and down he was separated from his wife. That only seemed to make it worse.

With the emotional clarity that often accompanies a hangover he could recall all the feelings of rejection starting with his father. Add to that Allison and Laurie and all the law firms that did not even want to recruit him, and last night’s unsuccessful try at seduction was just more proof that he was a loser who could not even get laid on Super Bowl Sunday by a woman in a bar. She had obviously been looking to hook up with somebody.

Months of sexual frustration and self pity welled up in him and he wanted to cry. He had not been with a woman since before Laurie walked out, his neglect was one of the reasons she left. Even in his debilitated state he could feel the anger start up again. ‘Bitch,’ he thought. Then he remembered how close he had come to scoring the night before. ‘All women are bitches,’ he thought. ‘They lead you on and then walk away, everybody walks away.’

Viciously he kicked off his filthy clothes, rubbed a great handful of all-purpose body wash into his beard, and massaged his scalp vigorously in a futile effort to dull the pain that throbbed in his temples. He guzzled the hot water as it fell on his face, then lathered his whole body until it tingled. His butt felt crusty and he could smell his own armpits. Realizing dimly that he had not actually bathed like this in several days, he trampled the now sudsy clothing under his feet, so as to save money on laundry.
